Mounjaro: Dosages, availability in the UK and what we know so far

Mounjaro

What do we know about weight loss drug Mounjaro?

Developed by the US pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly, Mounjaro is a new weight loss drug coming to the UK next month. The drug comes in a KwikPen device (an easy to use injection similar to an insulin pen). One pen equals four doses – a one month supply.

How does Mounjaro work?

Mounjaro comes in five dose strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 12mg and 15mg.

Recent trials have shown that starting on a 2.5mg dose (to get your body used to the drug) then moving up to 5mg as a maintenance dose after four weeks, is very effective for weight loss.

However, if you’re still struggling to lose weight, you can move up to 7.5mg for four weeks, then settle at 10mg for the next maintenance dose.

An increase in dose is always very personal and based on the individual, taking into account the effectiveness of the weight loss, your lifestyle, and ensuring any side effects are minimal.

When will Mounjaro be available in the UK within the NHS and privately?

Mounjaro will be available both privately and on the NHS as early as February this year in a ‘soft launch’. Patient information leaflets and prescribing guidelines for Mounjaro will be available then too.

Who can take Mounjaro?

Mounjaro has been approved in the UK for patients with type 2 diabetes and for weight management in obese adults, as well as those who have weight-related health issues like high blood pressure, prediabetes, and high cholesterol.

Is Mounjaro prescription only?

Yes. Mounjaro is a prescription only weight-loss drug. So it’s important that you speak to your GP or clinician about whether it’s suitable for you.

What are the side effects of Mounjaro?

As with any drug, it’s important to keep an eye on any side effects. Every person’s experience is different, but mild side effects of Mounjaro have been reported to include nausea, diarrhoea, appetite loss, constipation, and vomiting. These side effects tend to last a few days to weeks. If they last longer or you’re feeling really out of sorts, make sure you speak to your GP.

However, by increasing your Mounjaro dose in weekly increments you can mitigate most side effects.
